8 Ways to Support Families at Freedom House Ministries

Every family who walks through our doors is working toward the same thing: a stable, safe place to call home. Getting there takes more than a room and a bed. It takes clean spaces, reliable transportation, everyday essentials, and people who show up. Here are eight ways you can help a family move forward, today and for years to come.

Household items for move-in day. When a family signs a lease on their apartment, the excitement is real, and so is the empty kitchen. Small appliances like microwaves, crockpots, and coffee makers, along with basic cookware and linens, help a house start to feel like home from day one.

Gas cards and bus passes. Transportation is one of the biggest barriers standing between a family and stability. A tank of gas or a bus pass can mean the difference between making it to a job interview, a school pickup, or a housing appointment, or missing the chance altogether.

Cleaning and personal care supplies. A clean, well-kept room helps families feel a sense of pride and ownership over their space, even in a season of transition. Disinfectant spray keeps shared spaces healthy, while everyday items like face wash, laundry detergent, and sunscreen help a parent walk into a job interview with confidence or send kids to school with dignity. These small items carry a lot of weight for a family working to get back on their feet.

Become a Change Champion. Monthly giving helps Freedom House plan ahead with confidence, instead of wondering what next month brings. As a Change Champion, you’ll also follow along with a family’s journey, walking alongside their progress in a more personal, ongoing way.

Volunteer your time. Families in shelter need more than resources. They need people who see them, not just their circumstances. Whether it’s an hour or an afternoon, your presence tells a family they matter and are seen.

Serve a meal. A nutritious, home-cooked meal does double duty: it nourishes families and creates space for real conversation and connection. Sharing a table together is often where the strongest relationships begin.

Lead a Family Night activity. Game nights, crafts, or simple shared activities give families a chance to laugh, play, and reconnect with each other. In the middle of a hard season, these moments help strengthen the bonds that will carry them forward.

Include Freedom House in your estate plans. A planned gift is a way to make sure your generosity continues long after your lifetime. Including Freedom House in your will or estate plan helps ensure families in Brown County have a place to turn for generations to come.
