Utilizing construction skills brings a sense of pride

Every sunrise gives a fresh start. It’s a chance to rebuild our lives, learn new things, and move past yesterday’s troubles. This helps people discover who they are and grow.

Joseph and his family are a perfect example of never giving up while dealing with immense challenges. They hope for a better future and have become trusted community members.

Joseph volunteers his time doing yard work, electrical and completing various projects.

He and his wife Hadiatu had to leave Sierra Leone, a small West African country, because of corruption and persecution against Christians. Their escape took them over 10,000 miles from home. They traveled from refugee camps in Istanbul, through Spain, and to detention centers in Mexico. They traveled through Texas, where they asked for asylum, and finally made it to Wisconsin.

Their difficult journey was full of hunger, violence, and lies. Some of their worst experiences happened when people took advantage of them during their desperate trip.

Through everything, Joseph and his family stayed strong. Even though they had to leave home, they never lost hope. Joseph wanted to gain experience and help Freedom House, so he started volunteering in construction work.

He has dedicated over 100 hours of his time to caring for the main shelter and The Bridge (our apartment building). Previously, he worked as a construction worker back home. He has acquired new skills in small engine repair, basic plumbing, maintaining heating and cooling systems, grounds maintenance, and building safety inspections. Joseph also oversees the bountiful garden.

His volunteer work shows determination to help the community. Joseph is always cheerful and ready to help others. He wants to contribute, fit in, and build a better life for his family in America.
