Stable housing gives families a chance to rebuild their lives and achieve lasting independence
The Bridge has changed a lot. It used to be a place where families stayed for only two years. Now it is a long-term choice solution where families can live and feel safe.
The Bridge is a nine-unit apartment building owned and operated by Freedom House. Each unit comes with everything families need to start again. This makes a big difference for parents and children who have experienced homelessness. Families live without worrying about moving, which causes disruption
When families have a stable place to live, they can focus on other aspects of stability. Parents can look for jobs. They can find quality childcare for their children. Transportation can be improved. Education and taking care of their health become top priorities. Parents can also focus on their finances and budgeting for the future. Freedom House is also providing Success Coaching to help families navigate ongoing barriers and challenges.
“Moving from short-term to stable housing was a game-changer,” said Executive Director Jennifer Schmohe. “The previous 24-month model was working against families. They were only getting settled when they had to move again. Now we can work with families on a much deeper level. We can address root causes and build real independence.”
This change highlights Freedom House’s bold vision to disrupt homelessness forever. The Bridge provides families a home instead of a temporary stop in a life of trauma and crisis. Honoring dignity through long-term stability is a starting point for continued success. The Bridge proves stable housing, which is key to a life filled with joy and happiness.
