Fellowship and Community

Dear Friends,

I grew up in the Episcopal Church, moving through several small towns before my family settled in New London, Wisconsin, where my grandfather served as priest. During my sixth‑grade year, life shifted quickly: my father concluded his Air Force career, my grandmother passed away, and my mother completed her nursing degree. These changes drew us into my grandfather’s home, gathering close during a season marked by both loss and new beginnings.

Each time we stepped into the church, the congregation embraced us with a compassion that eased our grief. They mourned my grandmother alongside us, honoring the strong‑willed, faith‑filled woman she had been. As a child, I couldn’t fully grasp the emotional transitions unfolding around me, but I felt the warmth of being welcomed. The parish hall became a place where I learned the quiet beauty of community—listening to stories, offering my own, and receiving gentle encouragement from those who had lived far more than I could yet understand. Their kindness stayed with me.

That same spirit of fellowship is alive every day at Freedom House Ministries. Residents meet volunteers who offer not just help, but genuine connection. Friendships form. Stories are shared. Children play together and find a sense of normalcy. People lean on one another in ways that remind us that healing often happens in community. Our mission extends well beyond providing a bed. We cultivate a space where growth, dignity, and hope can take root.

December illuminated this beautifully. More than 160 volunteers came together to create a season filled with joy and care. They served meals, crafted with families, sang carols, and brought gifts through Operation Elf (our Christmas season giving program). Their generosity lit up the shelter, reminding every family that they are seen and valued. Every volunteer, donor, and supporter is part of a fellowship that strengthens us all.

If we had a fellowship hall large enough, it still wouldn’t hold the gratitude we feel. Many blessings, some visible and others quietly unfolding, shape our ministry each day. At Freedom House, we strive to make room for God’s generosity to shine through the way we serve, love, and show up for one another.

As we step into a new year, I invite you to stay connected to this mission.

Whether through volunteering your time, sharing your talents, or offering financial support, your partnership continues to transform lives. Together, we can expand the light of hope, hospitality, and God’s generosity for every family who walks through our doors.

In His name,

Jennifer Schmohe
