Volunteering in my own words: Jill

Jill has been volunteering at Freedom House for a few years and has utilized her Human Resources skills/talents to build and foster meaningful bonds with families and donors.

What inspired you to get involved with Freedom House?
I was looking for an opportunity to make a difference in the community while leveraging my professional background.

How has your time serving influenced or impacted the way you view homelessness?
It has given me greater insight into some of the obstacles faced. It has allowed me to foster greater empathy and compassion for those experiencing homelessness.

Is there a moment of impact that stands out to you from your volunteering?
A mother and her young daughter walked into the shelter recently. She was already on the waiting list and had been living out of her vehicle for the last few days. Desperate about her situation and frustrated about her inability to find housing, I listened to her story. By simply lending a compassionate ear, I was able to diffuse her anger and frustration. While I wasn’t able to change her scenario, she did leave a little brighter feeling validated and seen.
