Gaining Purpose Through Food
Former resident gives back to help families who are going through a difficult time
A simple egg roll has meant so much to so many.
A few years ago, former resident Mao approached Freedom House Ministries with an idea to give back to the organization that was helping her family find stability again.
In the Hmong culture, food is a point of teaching, connection and meaning. “In my culture, food brings everybody together,” she said. “We learn from a young age how to cook. It is important to share our Hmong culture with others.”
In 2024, while residing in shelter, Mao had an idea to help raise funds for our mission. With her skillset and passion, the egg roll fundraiser was born. The initial goal was to sell 400 egg rolls.
The response exceeded all expectations, and over 1,800 egg rolls were purchased. Last year, that number grew to more than 2,300 egg rolls.
Now, as the egg roll fundraiser returns for its third year, Mao reflects on the journey with anticipation: “I didn’t think it was going to grow as it has. It takes a whole village to help.”
It is Mao’s heart and faith that drive her. She is no longer ashamed of her journey and believes that her future is better because of those supporting her. “My experience in shelter was meaningful,” she said. “It was a difficult time, and I will always believe that food brings people together.”
